My 2016 Travel Year in Review

So we are well done with 2016 now, and starting 2017 with full speed. I’m really looking forward to what this year has in store for me/us!

Here is my short overview of my travels in 2016. I did explore tons of places so I’m happy about last year and can’t wait to do first trip in this year! What is it going to be?

CANADAΒ

First of all I lived in Vancouver Canada for a year. More exact from July ’15 till June ’16 and I loved it. Vancouver is such a great city. you got ocean, you got mountains, you got river, you got forests, you got urban area, you just have everything you could wish for! The reason why i went there was cause my boyfriend is from there so for change of scenery I got my Working holiday visa for Canada and woala we were on a plane to Vancouver. Unfortunately I didn’t explore it as much as I would like to, but I’m going to return many times for sure. But from the places I saw all I can say is, Canada you are a beauty!

If you want to visit Canada go to Vancouver! Best city in whole wide Canada!Β β™₯

CUBA

Cuba was always my dream destination and finally in March 2016 I traveled there for 3weeks. It was nice to escape Vancouver’s wet and grey everyday and change it for hot and sunny Cuban weather. We did a little tour around the Island, starting in Havana, then next was ViΓ±ales where we had some cigars and bottles of rum, followed by some snorkelling in Playa Larga. Next was Cienfuegos with day trip to El Nicho waterfalls and Guanaroca Lagoon, both of which were just amazing! And our favorite city for sure, Trinidad! Such a colourful city, with a great beach, Playa Ancon and great club in the cave! Here we took a day trip with catamaran to Cayo Blanco which was a disaster, you can read more in my post about Trinidad. Next was Che Guevara’s resting place, city Santa Clara and last but not least Varadero, for some relaxation one beautiful white sandy beaches. All together it was great trip and you can read all about it in blog posts!

ENGLAND & SCOTLAND

Beginning of June it was our time to leave Vancouver and move back to Slovenia. But why should we go straight home? Let’s take 2weeks of vacation first. Our flight was direct from Vancouver to London so we rented a car, squeezed our 4 suitcases and 4 hand luggages into that tiny car, drove some to truck company and we got relieved by two huge suitcases so car could breath, there was a long way ahead of us.

We stayed in London for a couple of days, continued our way to Sheffield and our final destination was Scotland. We did whole circle around Scotland and I’m in love with this country, all this lush greenery and old castles. Beautiful! My favourites where Edinburgh and Isle of Skye for sure. Can’t wait to go back there this year in April/May!

SLOVAKIA

Next stop was Bratislava with my parents. They picked us up on the airport so at least I could do was show them around Bratislava for 2 days. It was great to show them something new and see that they enjoy it!

SLOVENIA

Summer was time for catching up with everyone, visit here, visit there, barbecue here, barbecue there. It was crazy, didn’t really have a chance to go anywhere. We had tons of visits, Daniel’s parents were here for 2 months, then his sister came, his cousin and her fiance, another friend, then another family friend, it was just crazy. New babies were born, tons of music festivals and summer was over. Between all that we squeezed in some time to explore our beautiful Slovenia!

AZORES

In September it was time to go to destination that was on my bucket list for a long time, Azores! These 9 volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean, half way between North America and Europe were my ultimate travel destination so I was super hype when I bought the tickets. I had chance to visit 4 out of 9 islands and I can’t wait to go back there. I’ve visited Sao Miguel, Pico, Faial and Terceira. From beautiful crater lakes, to natural hot spring pools all the way to hiking the highest mountain of Portugal, Mountain Pico, to eating “Cozido das Furnas” and strolling down the streets of Angra do Heroismo. Everyday was great no matter what and all I can say is, I can’t wait to go back there!

SANYA, CHINA

In October I got great news that I was one of TOP 5 contestants in Sanya Tourism Board competition for the Destination Ambassador. That said, I got 16days trip to Sanya, China and chance to win 30.000$. At the end I ended up being 2nd which sucked, but of well. At least I had chance to discover new destination, with almost no money spent. It was really great to discover that China has such a tropical island, with the best mangoes, amazing beaches and even rainforest. We did so many different activities,Β zip-lining, canyoning, visiting local school and local craft shop, exploring coral island and buddhist temples, just so many options on this island.

SPAIN

But in the beginning of October before my departure to China, we squeezed in short trip to Spain. Daniel’s friends were coming from Canada to Europe and we decided to meet them in Valencia, Spain. We explored city and hung out for few days and after that we did short trip to Barcelona, one of my favourites. Unfortunately weather wasn’t good, so we didn’t explore that much, but my friend showed us some great restaurants and we saw some kind of South American street carnival, so it was great after all.

ZAGREB & BUDAPEST

And festive December was in the name of Christmas Markets. Finally I went to two of them, the one in Zagreb and the one in Budapest. I gotta say they were both great. Zagreb had a really great ice ring in park Zrinjevac, but lacked in food stand selections, but that’s were Budapest is the best, huge selection of delicious food and handmade products and the whole scenery is just amazing. Budapest is one of my favourite cities to explore so I always prefer it over Zagreb, but maybe i just need to spend more time in Zagreb and explore it thoroughly.
