Christmas Market in Zagreb

“ It’s the most beautiful time of the year “ that’s what Andy Williams is singing in his song. Even though winter is not my favourite season of the year, I have to say that I do love Christmas time, especially Christmas Markets in Europe!

What is there not to love? Nothing! Santa Claus, snow, scent of gingerbread and mulled wine, I’m SOLD!

Last weekend I visited Christmas Market in Zagreb and I had a blast! So many stalls with mulled wine, rum punch, different kinds of sausages, germknödel, pancakes, etc… Only thing missing was snow!

As you might know Christmas Market in Zagreb was voted the best Christmas Market in Europe for TWO YEARS in a row! Wow, Congratulations on that!

There is so many different little markets in the city and so many events going on! Market already started back in November, more exactly 26.11. and it’s going to last all the way till 8.1.2017! If you are close by you should really go and check it out, you are not going to regret it!

I recommend starting your walk from Glavni Kolodvor (Main train station), then strolling through beautiful park of Zrinjevac, where you can find Ledeni Park (Ice Park) with the biggest ice skating ring in this part of Europe, continuing your walk between numerous stalls where they offer great mulled wine, all the sausages you can imagine and sweets, but there are also stalls with beautiful handmade souvenirs. Once you reach the end of the park, walk another block and you are on the Main Square – Trg Bana Jelačića.

Drink some mulled wine and eat delicious sausages (kranjska klobasa, debrecinka, weiswurst, spicy sausage, etc… whatever your preference is) and then head towards the European Square where it’s time for dessert called Germknödel. This is actually a big steamed yeast dumpling, filled wth Powidl (very thick plum jam), over the top they pour vanilla sauce and for the end they sprinkle some poppy seeds. Great dish!

Continue walking towards Klovićevi Dvori from where you can get great view of the city and Cathedral. Last but not least check out Advent in the tunnel. This is a tunnel with 3D installations and live music, try to be there during the performance.

After all this you are going to be super hungry and tired, so this is perfect time for some amazing local food in cozy little restaurant. I can recommend Konoba Didov San! Very delicious and such a cute little restaurant! If you plan to go there during the weekend I would recommend you to make a reservation as it tends to fill up fast!
